SKIN CANCER MISDIAGNOSIS

Skin cancer, the malignant cells in the skin's outer layers, is the most common type of cancer with over a million cases diagnosed each year.  However other diseases have similar symptoms, which can result in a misdiagnosis of skin cancer.   Thus to avoid skin cancer misdiagnosis,  it is highly advisable to  confirm a skin cancer diagnosis by getting second opinions and further medical test.

Skin cancer is accountable for less than 1 % of all cancer deaths. Melanoma is rarer but more serious. Most non-melanoma skin cancers are treatable, with a cure rate of about 85-95%.

Although skin cancer can become both painful and fatal, it often begins as a rather innocuous and painless problem. What may start as a sunspot could become a severe malignant skin growth, referred to as a melanoma. A benign mole which has been present for one’s entire life could become cancerous. Suspicious growths, as well as moles that change over time or begin to bleed, could become malignant and should be observed and treated.

Some skin cancer or melanoma risk factors are well known, such as prolonged exposure to the sun. Sometimes normal moles become malignant without apparent cause or notice. Regardless of the potential risk factors that you may be exposed to, you need to periodically look for suspicious looking growths or changes. When these are noticed, you should seek the advice of a dermatologist or other trained medical professional. If you do not feel comfortable checking for potential problems yourself, you should periodically visit the doctor’s office.

When the opinion of a doctor, or more specifically a dermatologist, is obtained, medical guidelines require that a proper review be conducted, which could include the taking of a biopsy. It is critical that proper medical guidelines be followed because the ability to successfully treat these diseases in their early stages is high. If left untreated, the results could be disastrous, even fatal.
